It’s 2019, and engagement is the word on everybody’s mouth in Social Media. But what is it, and how do you get a high engagement rate?

With the introduction of the “algorithm,” Instagram switched from showing posts on your feed in reverse-chronological order to showing you posts from users that interact with you the most. So, the more exposure you get, the more likes and follows you will get?… Not exactly.

We can say that engagement is a combination of likes, follows, views, saves, comments, DMs, etc. Every time you like a post, or you message an acquaintance, you are engaging with them. The “algorithm” of Instagram will notice this and start showing you: more post from that user, more related content to that user, and “posts that might interest you.”

Many specialists confirm that the more you interact with your audience, the higher your engagement rate will be.

Here are a few tips that you can use to improve your Instagram game:

Post quality content

Instagram is a visual content platform; therefore, the more eye-catching your content is, the better. Invest in your content, probably getting a new camera will help you, or better editing. This applies to both images and video. When you are working on a post, think if you would “heart” it the moment you see it.

Check the best times to post

There are specific times during the day (and particular days during the week) where the traffic on Instagram can help you boost your engagement. If you post something during a high traffic hour, your chances of being shown on other people’s feeds are higher. Now, this is when the excellent quality comes into play, because, when people are active, they tend to scroll down quickly on their feeds, and they tend to engage with the most eye-catching posts.

Start a conversation

You can achieve this in different ways, like commenting on other people’s posts or using a call to action in your captions. For example, if your content is related to a bakery, you may ask your audience what’s their favorite flavor, or if they’d prefer one ingredient over another one.

Live videos and Stories

Live videos on Instagram are one of the biggest marketing trends for 2019. You may try different things when streaming live. You can do a weekly Q&A with your audience, you can also broadcast with another Instagrammer. You may showcase your store, a song you’re releasing, your cooking process, etc.  There are endless possibilities when it comes to live videos, and the best thing is that they appear first on your stories when you’re streaming.

Other great sources of engagement are Instagram Stories. The best thing about them is that you don’t have to be so formal when making one. If we have learned something about people, is that they are obsessed with how others live, so maybe, you can upload stories from your workplace to show your company’s culture to the world. You may also use Instagram’s interactive stickers to make a poll, ask questions, or create a quick quiz related to your brand. People also love quizzes!
